4 Primary Types of Cancer
We all know that cancer is one of the most life-threatening diseases to ever develop. However, did you know that this single disease has dozens of variations and permutations? Cancer can affect any parts of the body, and based on the affected area, it is given a name. Let us understand this better by taking a quick look at the main types of cancer.
1. Myeloma and Lymphomas
These cancers originate in the lymphatic system. This system comprises the glands and tubes in the body, which fight infections and filter fluids. When some of the white blood cells mutate in the lymphatic system or the lymph glands, it causes lymphomas. The cells behave abnormally and start to divide. They do not perish as they should and so cannot fight infection. When cancer starts in the plasma cells, it is known as myeloma. These cells are particularly made in the bone marrow of a person. They help to fight infections thanks to the antibodies they produce, which are called immunoglobins. When the plasma cells multiply and grow uncontrollably, they produce a kind of antibody that cannot fight infections properly. One in every 100 cancer cases in a myeloma case. On the other hand, five in every 100 cases are lymphomas.
2. Leukemia
This is known as a cancer of the blood cells, particularly the white blood cells. If the bone marrow produces too many of these cells and they are not completely formed, then they do not function properly. These abnormal cells collect in the blood and lead to cancer. Leukemia is not very common, as only three out of 100 cancer cases are leukemia. Unfortunately, this is the most common form of cancer in children.
3. Sarcomas
This is cancer that begins in the connective tissues around the body. These are connective tissues that range from tendons, fibrous tissue, cartilage, and bones. The two primary kinds of sarcomas are soft tissue and bone. Less than one out of 100 cancer cases are sarcomas. Bone sarcomas begin in the bone cells, which are soft tissue sarcomas that begin in the muscle or cartilage.
4. Carcinomas
This cancer begins in the epithelial tissues that line the body cavities like the chest or abdominal cavity, which line and cover the organs of the digestive system; and that cover the outside of the body, like the skin. This type of cancer makes up for 85 cases out of 100. Since there are different types of epithelial cells, they can lead to a variety of cancers, each with its causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Comon examples are basal cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
