Foods That Can Trigger Migraines
Migraine headaches stay longer and can have more severe physical implications than a regular headache. Some studies have shown that a change in diet can reduce the chances of experiencing migraines. While some foods soothe your symptoms, others trigger or worsen them. So it is essential to know which foods to eat and which ones to stay away from. Here is a list of foods to avoid to keep migraines away.
1. Excess coffee
Research has shown that consuming coffee in excessive quantities can trigger migraine attacks. Therefore, reducing coffee consumption is advisable to fight the problem. You should limit your intake to two cups a day to keep migraine headaches at bay.
2. Foods with MSG
If you wish to eliminate some foods to avoid migraines, make sure items with MSG are on your list. Studies have shown that monosodium glutamate, popularly known as MSG, has demonstrated the potential to trigger headaches. It is used as a flavor enhancer and is usually found in Asian foods, soy sauce, and packaged items. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to spot it in the ingredient list since it is listed under different names such as all-natural preservatives, natural flavoring, or hydrolyzed fat.
Sensitivity to MSG can kick in instantly. The symptoms can start to show within 20 to 25 minutes after consumption and can include headaches, chest tightness, and discomfort in the abdomen. Also, the form in which MSG is consumed has a role to play in triggering a headache. Studies have shown that consuming MSG in liquid form is more likely to trigger a migraine attack.
3. Red wine
Researches have confirmed that drinking alcohol is linked with migraine attacks. Alcohol contains histamine and tyramine, chemicals responsible for triggering the problem. Histamine is found in abundance in red wine. Therefore, if you are a migraine patient, make sure you stay away from it.
4. Chocolate
If you have been trying to avoid migraine attacks, refrain from consuming your favorite chocolate. In a study, it was found that chocolate was able to trigger migraines in 42% of the subjects compared to placebo.
5. Citrus fruits, peanuts, and beans
Eating nutritional food is essential. But, at the same time, some healthy foods can also act as a migraine trigger. These foods include peanuts, beans, citrus fruits, and cultured dairy products. Therefore, it is essential to know what you eat. If any healthy foods lead to a migraine attack later, make sure you eliminate them from your diet.
These were some of the most common foods that can trigger migraines. Besides these, certain other foods like eggs, wheat, baked goods, cheese, and salty foods can also have a similar effect. It is best to seek a doctor’s advice if you cannot decide what to eat and avoid.
